out to lunch

out to lunch...literally

Duc visit

my dear friend nguyen qui duc was in town this week for a friend's wedding...spent lots of time wandering around the city, eating too much food at wedding banquets, karaoke, bars, and so on...

looking for motorbike parts in Beijing to take back to Hanoi

lunch at Cafe Sambal

Gu Dexin show in Shanghai

the whole floor of the gallery covered with cement sidewalk like those found in Shanghai...interesting thing is that they are all fake, i.e. custom cast and made for this show. Apparently using real ones would have been too heavy for the underneath ramp structure. still very cool.

too good to pass up

fruit leather suitcase is a literal translation...probably should be something like 'waste container for fruit peels', i.e. plant matter instead of plastics and paper...too funny

假的!opening at Univeral Studios

after a whirlwind and utterly exhausting week...Forged Realities finally opened last night. The marks the first show I have curated in China...and I am proud to say that in the end it went rather smoothly and so far the response has been good. However, can't really trust what people say at an opening...better to wait a little bit and see. a big thank you to Universal's directors Pi Li and Waling for their support and of course the artists: 艾未未Ai Weiwei, C & C Karaoke Factory, Patty Chang, 高世强Gao Shiqiang, 洪浩Hong Hao, 洪浩Hong Hao and 颜磊Yan Lei, Jonathan Monk, Kaz Oshiro, 倪海峰Ni Haifeng, 邱志杰Qiu Zhijie, and Stephanie Syjuco.

the taxi's start to arrive, we were lucky to have beautiful weather

the countdown

2 count 'em TWO more days until opening and they are still building walls, painting, etc...no artwork in the space yet. I am trying not to freak out because I know in the end it will all come together. yet still....

stephanie syjuco arrived the other day, she is here making a new piece for the show and it is going well so far, thank god for Fiona who is helping her out in terms of getting around, doing collage work, etc.

4 stars

My show hasn't even opened yet and it got rated 4 stars in Time Out Beijing...but don't be fooled, it is on a scale of 6 (don't ask why)!

another round of events

some of the weekend's offerings in 798...went to hear Feng Mengbo's talk at Ullens. A really smart and fascinating artist but incredibly hard to hear his lecture mostly because of acoustics and other distractions...then onto some galleries to see some shows and then to Carol's opening at Marella gallery: The Weight of Reality, group show with Wang Jianwei, Wang Xiaojun, Li Yu and Liu Bo. Followed by dinner, of course, at Fang Lijun's restaurant...

universal studios "fame"

forgot to post this awhile back when it came out...maybe that's because these things tend to over-hype everything when in fact most of the information in the article is oldish news, not to mention profiling the same 5 people we see everywhere. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Agenda? puleez. the agenda here is money most of the time and that is often not very hidden. don't even know what is meant by this title nor does the text do much to clarify...anyway, the show I am curating is run by Pi Li who is pictured in the article

also USB's website is here.
